Alexander Wang Bets Big on Bucket Bags for Spring 2017

Categories:Other Brands

Coming late to a trend isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world. When Valentino first debuted its Rockstuds, I remember being surprised the brand was going all-in on the look after every other brand on the planet had already given studs a thorough run and started moving on the next thing. We all know what happened with the Rockstuds; a bang-on interpretation of a down-turning trend can change the whole game.

Bucket bags have been a big thing in the accessories market for several years now, and even Mansur Gavriel, whose hard-to-find debut bucket bag rocketed the brand to immense popularity and spawned a thousand copycats, is now focusing on other shapes. Alexander Wang, though, sent multiple interpretations of his Roxy Bag down his Spring 2017 runway, including some that cuffed to the models' wrists. Wang's clearly betting that he can goad consumers into embracing the bucket a bit longer.

I'm not sure that the Roxy is the design to do that, though. In its mini version, the bag makes a compelling alternative to a clutch for women who are inclined to buck traditional ideas about evening bags, but as a day bag, it's not exceptional enough to go the distance.

In addition to the bucket bags, Wang also debuted new flap shoulder bags and tiny crossbodies that appear to be intended to hold a phone and little more.

Alexander Wang Leaving Balenciaga?

Categories:Fashion

It appears that all the fashion houses, particularly the older ones, are going through changes with their creative directors. As the world changes, it is only expected to see the fashion industry changing as well, moving designers around in order to ensure the houses are shaken up and fresh new faces are seen on the runway shows, bringing experience from other designer labels to their new hosts and, in turn, keeping the styles presented uniquely different. This is what prevents a brand from going stale, from signature pieces becoming too many and new ideas leaking away. You always need a change of scenery, and that is what appears to be happening now with Balenciaga as well. It appears as though the house and Alexander Wang are in talks at the moment about him leaving for another opportunity where he can showcase his talents. Hired on in December of 2012 as the successor to Nicolas Ghesquiere, Wang had come in to replace the man who exited 15 years of work to go join Louis Vuitton. While this news may be setting in a bit of panic, fans of Wang at Balenciaga should know that another collection is set for release come the end of September and beginning of October at the Paris Fashion Week.

Balenciaga is owned by Kering, the French luxury goods holding company that has fobs over Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Gucci, Puma, Volcom and many others. Balenciaga is among those others, a fashion house founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in Barque Country, Spain, back in 1914. Trademarks of the house include bubble skirts and odd but feminine and ultra-modern shapes, the latter of which has certainly been adopted by Wang over the past few years. Balenciaga has grown under Wang’s direction and currently generates revenues ranging to over 350 million Euros. It is incredibly profitable. Now, it appears as if the Spanish house under French control could part ways with its American designer, ending their collaboration. That is quite the global market there, is it not?

It appears as if Wang might want to put the focus on his own brand at the moment, as it has been found that he’s been seeking investors for it. There are no confirmations either way, but the contract is set to end with his spring 2016 collection and may not be renewed. He has been a triumph as creative director and it would be very sad indeed to see Alexander Wang leave Balenciaga that certainly has gained not only in revenue but also in fame over the past few years. You see Balenciaga knock-offs now like never before, people proudly displaying their Balenciaga items and giving it the treatment Gucci or other such brands currently have. Perhaps the times have changed, perhaps the pieces have become more endearing, but whatever the case may be, we know that Balenciaga has truly become a household name in the fashion world of late, as well as among those who understand little of the industry.

Alexander Wang Rocco Bag In Neoprene Injected Black

Categories:Other Brands

Alexander-Wang-Rocco-in-Neoprene-Injected-Black

The Alexander Wang Rocco Handbag is not a new bag, but for the Fall and Winter 2014 Collection, it’s being reinvented and re-styled.

Usually the Rocco comes with pebbled leather and nowadays they are available in plenty of colors. This bag is famous for its studded bottom; especially ‘rose gold’ is simply to-die-for.

But anyways, the new Rocco bag is made in neoprene injected black leather and to be honest, it’s looks more like an accessory to company your ‘tough girl’ appearance, the ‘motorcycle’ type of look. Carry this bag, hop on your motor and travel the cities.

If you take another glance, the body of the bag also appears to be, or look quite similar to a tire of a car.

The Alexander Wang Rocco Bag in Neoprene Injected Black comes with two zipper pockets in one exterior gusset, a shoulder strap with a signature dog clips, an interior zipped pocket with logo patch and phone pocket, so basically enough compartments to store our essentials.

Measuring 13.5’ x 9.25’ x 9.25’ (L x H x W) inches, priced at $995 USD via Alexander Wang e-store.

Bag of the Week: Alexander Wang Large Prisma Tote

Bag: Alexander Wang Large Prisma Tote

Why It’s the Bag of the Week: The all-black-everything look is always an easy sell to me, but this Alexander Wang bag manages to take it and turn it into a great, carry-all work bag that would even fit in at a fairly conservative office. That’s a pretty neat trick.

Alexander Wang Slouchy Leather Shoulder Bag

Categories:Other Brands

Alexander Wang’s Coco duffle has been one of the most sought after bags of the season. Congrats to you if you can get your hands on one. It is sure to become a future classic. Wang’s relaxed, clean lined modern style has set the ball in motion for more handbag designs such as this slouchy shoulder bag ($280 at Net-a-Porter). Exclusive to Net-a-Porter, this Alexander Wang handbag is perfect for those of you on the wall as to whether you covet the blue denim printed suede or black stamped leather. Now you can have the best of both worlds – black leather and blue suede denim in one handbag. I am also on the fence about this bag, in one sense it is over-sized and unstructured which I love. I also am excited about the dual straps which open on either side instead of a single strap.

If you were to categorize this bag as a tote then it is more appealing, then it would worn in a more casual sense such as weekends. The shape kind of reminds me of those nylon travel totes used for grocery shopping. Not so appealing. If this bag were in the black stamped leather on both sides then I would definitely buy one. Now with the two-toned blue suede I am not so sure. It does look durable though and could hold lots and lots of essentials and perhaps even work as a weekender bag. That is if you are a strategic packer.

Fashion Week Spring: Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang is fashion’s ultimate it-boy these days. He’s the king of downtown cool and has played a huge part in the tough leather and shiny studs trends that we’re seeing on anything and everyone these days. Whether or not you like him, he has probably influenced what you’re going to be wearing for fall.

He showed his Spring 2010 collection over the weekend at New York Fashion Week, and I can’t help but think that with all the hype, he couldn’t have produced anything that would have wowed anyone. Not genuinely, anyway – so much is expected from him based on his last presentation that he probably would have had to find Jimmy Hoffa in the front row for anyone to be shocked.

But what he gave us was kind of cool anyway. His main influence seems to have been something with which I’m quite familiar – football. Wang took the term “American sportswear” quite literally and created a collection full of deconstructed prepster looks and not-so-subtle nods to athleticism. There were dresses and tops that were constructed partly out of tighty-whitey underwear, deflated football handbags, and even a letterman’s jacket or two.

This collection seemed to lack a bit of the intense focus and clear perspective of Wang’s previous collection, but there were flashes of greatness. A divine caramel leather jacket worn by Angela Lindvall was among my favorites, and I bet that there are hipsters in Brooklyn right now trying to figure out how to fashion a shirt like the one Magdalena Frackowiak wore out of men’s underwear.

Update: Alexander Wang Rocco 63460

The Coco is named because of the brass studded bottom, and the designs that feature different studded colors of this new iconic Alexander Wang are named the Rocco. Actually, the name Coco seems to no longer be used for legal reasons (we are trying to find more information). Alexander Wang has made more than a name for himself with the Coco and Rocco Duffel bags. The bags have been on everyone’s radar, hard for people to find and hard for those that find them to pass up. Part of the joy of these bags is the seemingly affordable price for a pebbled leather bag with an edgy underside.

Just in, Net A Porter has the Alexander Wang Rocco in black stamped leather with a glossy black studded bottom. No need to discuss it further, you all know the bag by now. If you have been searching, and the brass or silver studs were too in your face, this version may be perfect for you.
